Our planet is currently facing an unprecedented state of emergency concerning environmental depletion that has brought forth consequences such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and the rise sea levels. These urgent, global challenges require new paradigms being, relating to each other, doing operate from a foundational level (mental models), through relational (social connections, interdisciplinarity), into practice (technical solutions). Design for Conservation1 (D4C) methodological toolkit conservation groups can use maximize innovation outcomes ensure effective, sustainable, transformative change. In this paper, we present rationale behind mindsets intend set attitudes when following D4C approach. We also discuss role empathy, which fundamental aspect Thinking approach it central methodology main ability reconnection stage. Mental models help us simplify complexity, understand why consider some things more relevant than others, influence our decisions. general, contemporary designer promote openness positive attitude collaboration, creativity, error-friendliness, iteration, ambiguity, amongst others. While these have proven be very useful in market-led context, they are insufficient designing sustainability purposes. Conservation requires radical systemic shift current notions value, success, health wellbeing, cannot achieved mental models.
